Review of “Meher Legacy”, an archival website dedicated to Avatar Meher Baba

Meher Legacy (meherlegacy.org) is a new website that “was created to archive and preserve the words, images, and treasures of Avatar Meher Baba and his closest followers, and to clarify how they were created, edited, or otherwise changed and interpreted throughout history.”

This is an ambitious project and clearly a work in progress. It has just taken its first baby steps out into the world, but promises an athletic future. It is an important project.  The Meher Baba community has recently entered the post mandali (apostolic) phase of its development and is becoming aware of the need to accurately preserve the Avatar’s story in its astonishingly rich detail, and to account for how this story is itself the result of an editing process.

The importance of this archival work comes to a particularly poignant focus in the material collected on the subjects of the organization Sufism Reoriented and the official English language biography of Meher Baba, Lord Meher.

Both of these subjects have generated controversy with regard to the veracity of their narratives, and Meher Legacy is to be commended for  its brave efforts to provide documentation that helps to attain a better understanding of the wrinkles and warts that adorn the telling of the Avatar’s story.

Sufism Reoriented is one of the most unique, enigmatic and startling of Baba’s many projects and works. It is an organization that is the result of reorienting Inayat Khan’s Sufi Movement as represented by Rabia Martin and her successor, Ivy Duce. He assisted in the writing of a charter for this organization that divested it of its Islamic aspect and universalized its nature and role to be appropriate for this cycle of time. The great irony behind this work is that Baba’s motto is “I have come not to teach but to awaken”, yet he has left behind an organization empowered to teach in his name. How this organization is empowered to fulfill the promise of its charter is the crux of this controversy. This is where the official narrative provided by Sufism Reoriented turns to mud.

The story of Lord Meher, Baba’s biography, is a story that will be read and celebrated for all time. Yet the story of this official biography already has a contested history. The work necessary to establish a narrative of Meher Baba’s life that is both accurate and properly documented will take dedicated effort by many people. It’s important that a consensus as how to best proceed with this project be reached as soon as possible.

Meher Legacy is confidently taking the baby steps to present in a comprehensive and coherent manner the documentation necessary to help tell a sublime story well.

We should all support it.

All my days a hunger

All my days a hunger,
a longing for laughter;
I cry for the lost friend,
for the winsome Meher.

Our way is full of cry and petition for yet more wine

Our way is full of cry and petition for yet more wine-
how else can the rend of love street achieve his ruin?

We have no greater trust than in the master’s glance;
we did not stumble this way on our own, or by chance.

Long, long ago we began to long for the friend;
and now our desire is that this longing never end.

Drunk with the beloved’s name, it matters not a whit
that the sober sneer at our condition, and avoid it.

Our sanctuary is the dark alley of love street,
where we find her eyes and lips beguiling and sweet.

What can I say about the much talked-about path,
when the arms of the friend arrest me in joyous mirth?

O Darvish, by God’s grace you importune and whine
for yet one more crystal glass of Shirazi wine.

Dysfunction vs. Control Central: MBCNC vs. Sufism Reoriented of Walnut Creek

There have been recent Facebook posts and emails that bemoan the organizational acumen of MBCNC- Meher Baba Center of Northern Ca., and which implicitly praise the carefully regulated life and membership of Sufism Reoriented of Walnut Creek, which is right around the corner.

There is great truth to this slight. MBCNC has a notorious reputation for slapdash bureaucracy. We really don’t care as a group whether we sink or float, but depend on the grace of Baba to poke us about. We are individuals, and the concept of a group can pretty much go to hell. We have a huge membership only a fraction of which attend meetings on a regular basis. Our meeting place is the size of a shoebox. Our biggest event is Baba’s Birthday and often the only occasion many of us see each other.

Sufism Reoriented, on the other hand, prides itself as an organization that will last 700 years until the Avatar returns. This is, in fact, its very purpose. They have an alleged mandate to be a pure channel to God by a very carefully regulated membership with strict rules and obligations, chief of which is obedience to a succession of saints infallibly guiding them.  They are building a new 40 million dollar sanctuary bigger than the White House, and which is largely buried, something like a strategic command center. They dress in white- sometime pastels, and handsomely tithe to the mother of all church concepts.

But there is a problem with this concept that will be reviewed in late March when MBCNC hosts a review in Berkeley of the 1980 controversy over the appointment of Dr Mackie as the putative illumined murshid or head of this order. The problem chiefly lies in the assertion by SR that Dr Mackie- and his successors, are guaranteed by Meher Baba to be either saints or Masters of the Spiritual Path.

New Sufi Sanctuary Looks Like Marble Clad Petrol Tanks

FullSizeRender

sufism-3

The new Sufism Reoriented Sanctuary in Walnut Creek bears a curious resemblance to marble clad petrol tanks. This 60 million dollar complex of largely buried sacred space- 66,666 square feet, is about the size of one of the largest residential spaces in the US- Bill Gates’ house in Washington, and larger than the White House at 56,000 square feet. This complex is seven stories deep, and filled with explosive spiritual power. The interior of the largest “tank” is a marble pillared rotunda sketches of which suggest a likeness of Washington D.C. imperial architecture, where Sufism Reoriented has a branch office.

The complex will have 43 bathrooms to accommodate a collective rush on the facilities for the 400 person capacity building. This is more than 1 bathroom for every 10 members and if rumors have it right, each bathroom has 10 toilets that make it literally possible for the entire congregation to crap together.

Long past are the days of the humble sufi khanegah (meeting place). As for the kharabat- the place of ruin where lovers rejoice, please peruse your illustrated Divan-e-Hafez.

Update 2-27-2015:

It has been suggested that the “petrol domes” could be vastly improved by retaining the world-class artist Will David to decorate them. Perhaps this could be a collaborative effort involving the equally talented Leroy Parker and Max Reif.

Update 4-10-2015:

A witty satirist has suggested that this sanctuary is in fact a necropolis dedicated to the living lie of pretension: i.e., that there is no better monument to the Christ than a vat of formaldehyde.

Ghazal #37 from Ghazals For The Friend

The storm of desire leaves me a piteous wreck:
spirit becomes twisted and broken from neglect.

Snarling dogs of discontent prowl around the door;
unless love gives us courage, we hunt after spoor.

We can’t see you in the darkness of our hunger;
bless the day when we miss your embrace no longer!

Bright light fills the space swept clean by the chaste wind;
mind becomes brilliant by the pure breath of the friend.

The strength of your loving smile inspires my tired feet;
all bitterness by singing your name becomes sweet.

By your grace I fill the lungs with diamond air,
and by your grace expel all doubt and black despair.

Darvish dreams of waking up to a vast pure heart,
with the beloved ever present- never apart.

Celtic fire in my head

Celtic fire in my head
burns and longs to be bled
of all wan pretension:
love rises from the dead.

The narrow path to heart

The narrow path to heart
often pulls us apart
to find more nimble feet;
anguish is graceful art.

Mary carries the Word within her womb to safety

Mary carries the Word within her womb to safety-
soon the world will be delivered from captivity.

Giddi-up donkey, through the wind and rain and snow.
A wondrous Christ-child’s cry yearns to grace bestow!

The wandering Stars combine luminous astral virtues
to mirror the Ancient One’s holy radiant nature.

All the doors that close in Joseph and Mary’s face
lead to the Manger for Nature’s open embrace.

The Magi come bearing gifts for the King of Kings,
whose beauty is the glory that inspires men to sing.

Christ is the promise that releases prayer in the heart,
by which Darvish is free from the tyranny of thought.

Giddi-up donkey, through the wind and rain and snow:
the heavens weep in joy for Man and Earth below!

Fall rain on the shame

Fall rain on the shame
of the politician;
wash away the blame
of our corruption.

Fall rain on the shame
of mighty Big Fist;
wash away the blame
that lies in our breast.

Fall rain on the shame
of We the People;
wash away the blame
of our civic babble.

Fall rain on the shame
of the whore Progress;
wash away the blame
of our lewd congress.

Rise Sun in our heart
with your burning light;
burn away the dark
blame that fills our night.
